Loose forward Anton Segner has broken fresh ground by becoming the first All Black to sign a contract with NZ Rugby through to the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the United States.
Segner’s decision to ink the long-term deal with NZ Rugby not only adds another chapter to a colourful story that has created headlines around the world, it also indicates he could have a long future in the All Blacks.
Having left Germany for Nelson College as an exchange student in 2017, Segner, then 15, had a goal of becoming an All Black. That dream came true when made his debut for the All Blacks against Italy in Wellington in July.
The 25-year-old’s new contract comes off the back of an international season that’s included two test caps and two performances against the Stormers and Bulls in South Africa before an ankle injury ended his tour early.
Segner has also committed to the Blues and Auckland through to the end of 2031.
Today, All Blacks coach Dave Rennie is expected to name Segner in his 34-man squad for the Bledisloe Cup tests in Auckland and Sydney on October 10th and 17th.
Segner has captained NZ Secondary Schools, Crusaders under-20s, Auckland, and most recently the Blues in 2026. Segner has represented the Blues 54 times since his debut season in 2022 and has made 17 appearances for Auckland in the Hilux NPC since 2024.
Segner was selected to the New Zealand Secondary Schools in 2018. He made his NPC debut for Tasman in 2020, joined the Crusaders academy, then signed with the Blues in 2022 and with Auckland in 2024.
