Queensland State of Origin legend Wally Lewis has rubbished claims the Maroons team is too old heading into the 2015 series opener in Sydney.
Having lost the 2014 season after an unprecedented eight-year winning streak, there is a suggestion the current crop of Maroons have gone past their used by date with New South Wales the new favourite.
But Lewis was quick to argue to the contrary, emphasizing the strong league form of a number of Queensland’s aging but tried-and-true stars.
Jonathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Greg Inglis are some big names in the Maroons team.
Meanwhile, New South Wales will be without a number of their key performers from last year’s triumph, with Jarryd Hayne, Paul Gallen and Greg Bird among those absent.
The NSW Blues face the Queensland Maroons at 10pm tonight.
