19th ranked Kei Nishikori has defeated seventh seed Marin Cilic in a gruelling five‑set match to reach the US Open semifinals.

Nishikori will face Novak Djokavic in the semifinals while the defending champion and No 1 seed at Flushing Meadows, Rafael Nadal will meet Juan Martin del Potro for a place in the final.

After Naomi Osaka reached the women's semifinals earlier, Nishikori's win means there is a Japanese man and woman in the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time in the Open Era.

In the Women’s competition, Serena Williams has reached the semi‑finals for a ninth consecutive time and will face no 17 ranked Naomi Osaka while Anastasija Sevastova will feature in the second semifinal and will meet the winner between Suarez Navarro and Madison Keys.
