World Rugby has cancelled the first of four scheduled Rugby World Cup games today between Canada and Namibia in Kamaishi due to Typhoon Hagibis.
World Rugby announced in a statement the game had been cancelled with an evacuation order still in place.
World Rugby states a level 5 evacuation order remaining operational following Typhoon Hagibis, World Rugby and the Japan 2019 Organising Committee have cancelled today’s Rugby World Cup Pool B match between Namibia and Canada on safety grounds.
They say Typhoon Hagibis was one of the most powerful storms to hit Japan in decades and safety considerations are at the heart of the decision.
World Rugby Chief Operating Officer and Tournament Director Alan Gilpin said they had no choice in the wake of Typhoon Hagibis' destruction.
Gilpin says they sill remain optimistic that other matches today will go on.
In today's matches, USA will take on Tonga at 5.45pm, Wales will face Uruguay at 8.15pm while Japan will play Scotland at 10.45pm.
