Suva Grammar School History

⭐ Suva Grammar School was established in 1917

Originally opened on July 8, 1918 the then Boys Grammar School (BGS) was established to cater for European boys, British in particular.

Suva Grammar School was established during a period of colonial rule and originally served the European population. However, the school became known as a diverse "melting pot" and international school, with students from various backgrounds across Fiji attending the school.

🏫 The school has a strong legacy in sports and is particularly known for its sports talent development program, winning significant competitions like the Coca-Cola Games and others

Key Facts
Founded in 1917, and formally consolidated as Suva Grammar School in 1960—that’s 65 years of unified Grammar excellence being celebrated this September 2025.

-Grammar hoisted the coveted Deans Trophy in rugby for the first time in 2001, ending a 62-year drought. Rugby studs included Sakiusa Matadigo, Anthony Wise, Manoa Vosawai and Wame Lewaravu.

-Athletic dominance: Boys reigned at Fiji’s Coca-Cola Games five years in a row (2007–2011), with a resurgence in 2022 (boys champs again!). Girls too have claimed the crown four times.

-Cheerleading innovation: SGS not only pioneered Fiji-style ‘pom-pom’ cheerleading in 2009 but also boldly introduced co-ed cheer squads in 2010. Grammar literally re-wrote the rulebook.

-Heavy hitters in politics and justice: Ex-Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase; Fiji’s VP Jone Madraiwiwi; international jurist Nazhat Shameem; coup-figure George Speight; and media innovator Sree Sreenivasan, among others.
