Spain and Barcelona teenage star Lamine Yamal is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with hopes growing that he will be fit for Spain's opening match.
The 18-year-old winger, who emerged as one of football's brightest stars following his impressive performances at UEFA Euro 2024, has not played since sustaining the injury during Barcelona's victory over Celta Vigo in April.
Initial fears suggested Yamal may have suffered a serious hamstring tear, raising concerns over his availability for the World Cup.
However, Barcelona later confirmed that while the youngster would miss the remainder of the domestic season, he was expected to recover in time for the tournament.
Despite fitness concerns, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente included Yamal in his 26-player World Cup squad, highlighting the youngster's importance to La Roja's title ambitions.
There was further encouragement for Spanish fans in late May when Yamal posted footage of himself back in training and working with the ball at Barcelona's training base, suggesting his rehabilitation is progressing well.
Reports indicate that Spain and Barcelona medical staff have remained in close contact throughout his recovery, with suggestions that Yamal could be eased back into action later in the group stage rather than being risked in Spain's opening matches.
De la Fuente remains optimistic that the teenage sensation will play a role during the tournament and has hinted that Yamal could initially be used as an impact substitute if required.
Yamal is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in world football, with his dribbling ability, creativity and match-winning performances making him a key figure in Spain's hopes of lifting the World Cup trophy.
The teenager, who will turn 19 just days before the World Cup final, will be eager to overcome his injury setback and showcase his talents on football's biggest stage.
Spain opens its World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on 16th June before facing Saudi Arabia on 22nd June and Uruguay on the 27th in Group H.
Spain has won the FIFA World Cup once, claiming its only men's title in 2010 when it defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the final in South Africa.
Meanwhile, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off next Friday and run until 20th July.
