Hungarian national facing meth charges remains in custody

A Hungarian national charged with the unlawful importation and possession of methamphetamine has been further remanded in custody.

Fonta Laszlo appeared in the Lautoka High Court earlier this week facing one count of unlawful importation of illicit drugs and one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs.

It is alleged that on 17th April this year, Laszlo unlawfully imported and possessed 4,869.7 grams of methamphetamine.

He was intercepted by authorities at Nadi International Airport, where a search of his baggage allegedly revealed drugs concealed in his luggage.

During the hearing, the State informed the court that disclosures had been filed and served but sought additional time to file the Information.

Defence Counsel raised concerns about the Laszlo's medical condition, saying he would be responsible for the costs of his surgery.

The court was also told that Defence Counsel had been unable to obtain instructions from Laszlo while he was in remand because their interpreter was not allowed entry into the remand facility.

The court advised that arrangements would be made for a suitable interpreter to assist the accused and indicated that Defence Counsel could use the court premises to obtain instructions from him.

The matter has been adjourned to 16th June.
