The Land Transport Authority has issued 1,873 Traffic Infringement Notices this year to drivers operating private and commercial vehicles as public service vehicles without the required permits and licences.
According to the LTA, enforcement efforts against illegal operators remain strong, with 46 vehicles impounded, six drivers issued final warnings and 10 drivers having their licences suspended for six months following show-cause proceedings.
LTA says it continues to actively monitor, detect and take enforcement action against those operating illegally through routine compliance checks and targeted enforcement operations.
They reveal that 1,363 Traffic Infringement Notices were issued in 2024, while 2,398 in 2025.
LTA says the sharp increase in detections last year reflects strengthened enforcement efforts, enhanced compliance operations, increased surveillance and improved detection of illegal public service vehicle operators.
The Authority says it works closely with the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders through joint operations aimed at identifying and deterring illegal operators.
It stresses that these operations are important for protecting passenger safety, ensuring fair competition for licensed operators and maintaining the integrity of Fiji's public transport system.
LTA warns that individuals found operating public transport services without the required permits or approvals may face infringement notices, fines of up to $2,000, show-cause proceedings, vehicle impoundment and other regulatory action under the Land Transport Act and associated regulations.
The Authority says the recent opening of taxi permit applications provides a lawful pathway for people interested in entering the public transport industry and is encouraging prospective operators to follow the approved application process.
LTA is also urging members of the public to use only licensed and regulated taxi services and avoid engaging private or illegal PSV operators. It says passengers should ensure the vehicle they use displays a valid permit and approved identification and complies with LTA requirements.
