David Tolu Young named Fiji flag bearer, Anahira McCutcheon baton carrier for Commonwealth Games

Fijian swimming sensation David Tolu Young will be the flag bearer, while Anahira McCutcheon has been selected as the baton bearer for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

This has been confirmed by Team Fiji as athletes and officials presented their traditional i-tatau to Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru today.

Speaking at the ceremony, Saukuru congratulated the athletes, coaches, managers, officials and support staff selected to represent Fiji.

Team Fiji consists of 58 athletes and officials, with athletes competing across athletics, basketball, boxing, lawn bowls, judo, para-athletics, swimming and weightlifting.

Saukuru says 19 female athletes are part of the team, and their achievements continue to inspire young Fijians to dream bigger.

He told the athletes that they have earned the privilege of wearing the Fiji badge through dedication, perseverance and strong performances.

Saukuru says the Government remains committed to supporting sport through stronger coaching, athlete development, sports science and high-performance programmes.

Saukuru also reminded them that when they wear Fiji’s colours, they carry the hopes, dreams and prayers of Fijians at home and abroad.

He is urging them to trust their preparation, support one another and compete with courage and confidence.

He encouraged the athletes to compete with passion and integrity and represent Fiji with pride and humility, both on and off the field.

Meanwhile, Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission Ajay Ballu says preparations have included medical assessments and workshops covering Team Fiji values, responsibilities, travel, accommodation, competition schedules, safeguarding, anti-doping, hydration, mental health and nutrition.

The team’s medical support group includes three physiotherapists and one doctor.

The first major group is expected to leave Fiji on 19th July, while some athletes are travelling earlier for overseas training before joining the team in Glasgow.

The para-athletics team is expected to depart tomorrow morning ahead of the Games.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games are taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
