Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate has assured people that a lot of assessments and surveys are being carried out to prevent landslides.

Usamate says people cannot see a survey or an assessment when they are travelling along roads like Edinburgh Drive in Suva but it is being carried out and implementation of activities takes place later to address the issues.

His assurance comes after SODELPA MP Aseri Radrodro asked Usamate about the government’s plans to ensure public safety from the threats of landslides at vulnerable spots along our roads.

Radrodro adds that there are no plans for roads like Reservoir Road, Edinburgh Drive and Sawani Serea Road and there is nothing to show that assessments are being carried out and as such there is a big risk to the travelling public.

Meanwhile, Usamate says excessive rainfall caused a landslide in Draubuta, Nadroga where material piled up by a contractor of the Fiji Roads Authority was pushed by water in the village.

He says a letter was received about the incident and since then various government teams have visited the village and currently officials of the Ministry of Health are doing vector spraying and checking the medical condition of the villagers.

Usamate says the FRA through its contractor is trying to get rid of the material that was pushed in the village.
