The police vehicle involved in the accident in Samabula.

The police vehicle that was involved in an accident at the Samabula traffic lights at around midday yesterday was escorting a foreign diplomat with it’s headlights and siren on.

Police say all other motorists had made way for the escort vehicle, however the white private car which was also involved in this accident did not make way for the Police escort vehicle.

Police have not confirmed if the Police vehicle had crossed the red light.

Eyewitnesses say that the police vehicle should have slowed down as the private vehicle was already past the green light.

We questioned Director Traffic, SSP Mahesh Mishra on this issue.

Mishra says emergency vehicles can cross the red light provided the other vehicles make way for the emergency vehicle.

He says motorists should give way to police emergency vehicles.

Mishra claims the Police vehicle did slow down when it was approaching the traffic lights.

Meanwhile, the private vehicle which was involved in this accident belonged to a cane farmer from Tabia, Labasa.

Sujit Kumar bought this car just yesterday morning and was planning to take it to Labasa this evening. Kumar says he had worked hard to collect $5,000 and was very happy that he had bought a car.

One of the sides of the private car has suffered major damages.
