About 30 evacuees taking shelter at Draiba Primary School

Draiba Primary School is the first evacuation centre opened for a few families living in Korova settlement beside the Fiji Maritime Academy at Laucala.

This has been confirmed by the Director of the National Disaster Management Office Anare Leweniqila who says that there are about 30 evacuees in Draiba.

Leweniqila says that they have also opened up Vishnu Deo Primary School as the second evacuation centre as they have received reports from police that flood water is raising in Wailea.

He says that residents in the Wailea area should take shelter at Visnu Deo Primary School if they feel that they will be affected by the heavy downpour.

Leweniqila says as heavy rain throughout the country is expected, people should take heed of the current warning that has been issued by the Nadi weather Office.

He says they have activated all emergency arms of government.

Leweniqila says they are also working with flood prone municipalities around the country on the decision to keep businesses running as preparation mode for TC Mona is underway.

He says movement will restricted if the need arises in towns and cities.

The NDMO Director also highlighted that the system has passed Rotuma and they have received no reports of damages on the island.

Leweniqila says that as the country braces for a Category 2 cyclone, wind speed will be expected to reach up to around 100km.

He says that people also need to take necessary precaution like taking down temporary sheds as they can be blown away.
