Employers are being reminded that workers required to work during the Easter public holidays must be paid double.
The Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Jone Maritino Nemani says any worker required to work on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, or Easter Monday is legally entitled to double their normal pay.
Nemani says workers who do not work on the public holiday may still be entitled to normal pay, provided they worked their scheduled days before and after the holiday.
The Permanent Secretary stresses the importance of honesty and responsibility from workers, particularly when taking leave around the holiday period.
He says workers must be honest if they are unable to attend work before or after a public holiday, and valid reasons or medical certificates must be provided where required.
Nemani says fairness in the workplace goes both ways, and both employers and workers must respect their obligations under the law.
He adds that understanding and respecting these rules helps maintain trust and avoid unnecessary disputes.
