Expect traffic when travelling into the Capital City this morning, and drivers are urged to plan their travel well, as several roads will be temporarily closed for the state funeral procession of the late former President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
The Fiji Police Force is thanking the public for their patience and understanding as the nation prepares to farewell Ratu Epeli.
Road closures will begin from 7am and include State House, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Victoria Parade, Southern Cross Road, and Albert Park at the junction of Southern Cross Road and Gladstone Road.
The state funeral service will commence at 8:30am at Albert Park and is expected to conclude at 10am.
Following the service, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces will lead the funeral procession through Suva City, traveling from Albert Park along Southern Cross Road, Victoria Parade, Scott Street, and Rodwell Road, before concluding at the Suva Flea Market.
The late former President will then be escorted to his final resting place on Bau Island, with the cortege traveling along Edinburgh Drive, Ratu Mara Road, Kings Road, Rewa Bridge, Wainibokasi Road, Old Bau Road, and Naitalasese to Bau Landing.
Police say the Fiji Navy and the National Fire Authority will assist with transportation and movement to and from Bau Island.
Meanwhile, on Bau Island, preparations are underway to welcome distinguished guests, including King Tupou VI, as well as the Tui Nayau, Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba this morning.
According to Turaga Masau Louis Toganivalu, a iQaloqalovi ceremony will be presented to Ratu Tevita, marking his first visit to the island in his new role.
The iQaloqalovi is a traditional Fijian welcoming ceremony, where a tabua—a sperm whale tooth—is presented to a high-ranking chief or guest of honour, symbolising respect and a formal invitation to enter the vanua.
Ratu Epeli will be buried at the Sacred Burial ground in Bau at 2pm.
