The Fiji Police Force clarifies that the suspect, who was involved in the accident that occurred along Rewa Street on December 12th, 2025, was released on medical grounds, and not bribery.
Police say allegations were made of interference and bribery, as the suspect was released without being charged.
They say the victim remains admitted in the hospital.
Police say the suspect had sustained injuries during the accident and was sent for medical treatment, and upon his return, he had produced a medical certificate, and officers had no other option but to release him, as investigations continued.
They added that claims were made again about collusion and corruption, as the suspect was not charged, which again were not true.
Police say there was no such intent by the investigating officer, nor was there any interference by other police officers to delay the laying of charges.
They say the delay was out of the police's control, as investigators had to wait for the medical report to be issued by the relevant authority.
They further say Police could not charge the suspect in the absence of the medical report, as it was a crucial piece of evidence needed to proceed with the formal laying of charges.
They added that the medical report was received this week, and the suspect was charged and produced in court on Friday, 19th of December, and bailed by the court to reappear on the 23rd of February 2026.
The Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga says the allegations made against the organisation hold no merit and calls on those spreading the misinformation to be mindful of making baseless claims and to seek factual information through the proper channels.
The Acting Commissioner says it is easy to make assumptions based on hearsay, and is urging members of the public to be responsible with what they post on social media, as the right to expression and speech also comes with a high degree of responsibility.
