Parents urged to step up child safety talks during school holidays

As school holidays are underway, the Ministry of Children, Women and Social Protection is encouraging parents and guardians to use this time to speak with children about personal safety.

The Ministry has highlighted the need for children to understand the difference between safe and unsafe touch, identify inappropriate behaviour, and feel confident to raise concerns if something does not feel right.

They say that children’s wellbeing improves when adults listen attentively, believe them, and take their concerns seriously, particularly when a child says they feel uncomfortable around someone.

Parents and caregivers are urged to keep communication open and reinforce personal boundaries during this period of rest, play, and family time.

The Ministry also advises that confidential counselling and support are available through toll-free helplines on 1325 and 1560.
