The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is urging the public to remain alert, prepared, and watch out for one another as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is expected to intensify into a Category 3 system within the next 18–24 hours.
Acting Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mitieli Cama says that in the last 24 hours, three evacuation centres in the Eastern Division were activated to ensure the safety of communities from flash flooding.
He says two teachers are being relocated to the Rakiraki Village Hall, while five families are taking shelter at Lawaki Village Hall in Ra.
He adds that ten families are being accommodated at the Nakasaleka Village Hall in Kadavu.
Cama says response teams are already on the ground and ready to assist affected communities.
He adds that while TC Vaianu is not expected to make direct landfall in Fiji, its impact will still be felt nationwide.

He is urging Fijians living in low-lying or flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and move to higher ground if necessary.
People should not attempt to cross flooded roads, rivers, or crossings.
Residents are advised to secure homes, loose items, and boats in preparation for strong winds.
Non-essential travel and outdoor activities should be limited during this period.
The Acting Permanent Secretary says schools will be closed tomorrow for students' safety and parents are reminded to supervise children closely at home and keep them away from flooded areas, drains, and waterways.
