The new Naqara Jetty in Ono Island in Kadavu is set to significantly improve access, transport and economic opportunities for the island, making it easier for people to move goods and services, support forestry operations, and strengthen livelihoods.
Funded through a Fiji Pine Trust grant under the Ministry of Forestry’s 2025–2026 allocation, the $300,000 jetty is a key investment in the future of the Ono Pine Scheme and the people it supports.
From humble beginnings in 1974 with just 7.4 hectares, the Ono Pine Scheme has grown into a 530-hectare plantation, reflecting the resilience and commitment of the people of Ono.
Today, with an estimated 90,000 cubic metres of standing pine valued at over $8 million, the scheme continues to support housing, environmental protection and income generation.
The jetty will play an important role in improving the harvesting and transport of pine while strengthening connectivity for the island, ensuring that forestry development continues to deliver practical benefits to the community.
The project was officially launched with a ground-breaking ceremony by the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu alongside the Vanua Vakaturaga o Koroivabea, community leaders and stakeholders.
As Fiji prepares to mark the International Day of Forests this week in Kadavu, the ground-breaking highlights what can be achieved through strong community effort and Government support.
