A four-day joint maritime operation across the Mamanuca waters has seen authorities inspect boats, fishing vessels, yachts and other marine craft as part of efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety and protect Fiji’s marine environment.

The operation was carried out by the Fiji Police Force in partnership with the Mamanuca Marine Protection Rescue Initiative.

It also involved officers from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, Ministry of Fisheries, Department of Immigration, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and other key stakeholders.

The joint team carried out compliance inspections on local boats, fishing vessels, yachts and other marine craft operating around Cloudbreak, popular tourist locations and across the Mamanuca waters.

A community outreach programme was also held alongside the enforcement operation.

Representatives from the Online Safety Commission, Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection and the Fiji Police Force spoke with communities and stakeholders about public safety, responsible marine activities and crime prevention.

The operation also received strong support from tourism stakeholders in the Mamanuca Group.

The Mamanuca Marine Protection Rescue Initiative says this support demonstrates the strong partnership between law enforcement agencies, non-government organisations and the tourism industry in keeping the marine environment safe and secure.

MMPRI Director of Operations Paula Waqakalou says the partnership with Police is part of a wider strategy to support the national fight against illicit drugs while creating safer marine environments for local communities and visitors.

Waqakalou says MMPRI remains committed to supporting Police and partner agencies through joint maritime operations, community engagement and other initiatives aimed at improving safety, security and the protection of Fiji’s marine resources.

The Fiji Police Force has acknowledged all participating agencies, community partners and tourism operators whose combined efforts contributed to the success of the operation.
