The Ministry of Health has been out and about in schools, ensuring they have the appropriate tools to create the right environment for learning.
This week, the Minister for Health, Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, visited two boarding institutions in Tailevu, Ratu Kadavulevu School and Queen Victoria School, delivering much-needed cleaning equipment such as mop buckets, mops, toilet brushes, floor cleaners, rubbish bins, masks, gloves, as well as farming equipment.
The Ministry says this is to ensure students maintain a clean environment by properly disposing of rubbish in the allocated bins.
They say the other cleaning equipment will enable students to maintain clean bathrooms and toilets at all times, preventing the spread of diseases such as typhoid, leptospirosis, dengue, and diarrhoea in schools.
Meanwhile, Health Inspectors in the Central Division conducted a follow-up inspection at the dormitories at Nasinu Secondary School.
They inspected the boarding facilities to ensure they are clean and safe for student occupancy before students move in.
The Ministry says this follow-up was carried out after notices were issued on the last day of school last year, with the school given seven weeks to carry out all recommended corrective works.
They say health inspectors noted with satisfaction that significant improvements have been made.
The first two boys’ dormitory buildings have been fully repaired, cleaned, and are ready for use, with all required facilities replaced and functioning.
The Ministry highlighted that repair works are ongoing at the third dormitory building and the dining hall, with the school aiming to complete the works before boarding students return on Tuesday.
They say the team will continue to monitor the situation and will re-inspect the school canteen and WASH facilities once the school reopens to ensure sustained compliance.
