Heavy Rain Warning remains in force for Fiji

A Flood Warning is now in force for all low lying flood prone areas adjacent to and downstream of Wailevu River in Macuata, while a Heavy Rain Warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji.

The Nadi Weather Office says water levels in the Wailevu River are above the warning threshold and continue to rise steadily.

They say an active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain remain slow moving over the country.

Meanwhile, a shallow low-pressure system west of Viti Levu is bringing moist north-westerly winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to most parts of the country through to the weekend.

They say this will bring occasional periods of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms over Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Korovou, the interior of Ba and Ra, Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Bua, Lekutu, Dreketi, Seaqaqa, Labasa, Namuka, Udu Point, Rabi, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

Possible impacts include flash flooding of flood-prone, rivers/streams, low-lying informal settlements/communities, businesses and Irish crossings which can lead to traffic disruptions.

Surface flooding is also expected on streets in urban areas with poor drainage, while wet roads and reduced visibility, especially during heavy rain, may increase the risk of road accidents.

The National Disaster Risk Management Office is warning people to stay away and refrain from attempting to cross or swim in flooded areas.

They are also advising people to contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority should they need assistance to move to higher ground.
