Fiji drug situation does not warrant police to use firearms – Tudravu

The drug situation in Fiji still does not allow the Fiji Police Force to use firearms.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu highlighted this during the press conference following the death of police constable Peniasi Racagi.

He says the Fiji Police Force remains the frontline law enforcement agency and continues to conduct investigations as mandated by law.

Tudravu also highlighted that the involvement of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces was established some time ago, as they are already undertaking an ongoing exercise.

With the military assisting in drug raids, Tudravu says he will discuss with the Commander the nature of joint operations being carried out now and in the future.

He reaffirmed his message to officers that they have sworn an oath to serve and protect the public, and they must be prepared to face the risks associated with the profession they have chosen.

Meanwhile, officer Peniasi Racagi was found dead in Lami on Sunday morning, and Tudravu has directed that all available resources and assistance be provided to the investigation team to ensure a thorough investigation is done.

Tudravu has confirmed that the post mortem findings have established elements of foul play.
