A family in Nakasi is seeking justice after their family members were allegedly not accorded proper medical assistance after visiting the Nakasi Health Centre, and they claim that due to medical negligence, their loved ones suffered.
Anishma Lal has lodged a complaint against two doctors and the medical team at the Nakasi Health Centre who were on duty at the time.
She says the facility systematically failed her family and they did not only lose a relative, but also witnessed what she describes as a level of alleged cruelty and incompetence in the treatment of their loved ones.
She alleges that her father was brought to Nakasi Health Centre in visible distress in 2024 and after a cursory glance at his vitals, the doctors looked at her family in the eye and stated he was acting.
She claims that they mocked her father’s pain and dismissed his symptoms as a performance.
Lal says her uncle was brought to the hospital clutching his chest, unable to breathe and speak.
She adds that instead of medical intervention, her uncle was met with cold bureaucracy as the
staff refused to touch him without a health card.
She says her aunt hurried home to verify his identity, and her uncle's heart ceased as he died on the floor because a plastic card was prioritized over his pulse.
She has requested a full investigation into the two doctors and the night staff on duty.
She has also requested an audit of the facility’s diagnostic equipment and questions how a patient’s oxygen levels could go from 98 percent to 13 percent within one hour.
She says either the machines are broken, or the staff are lying.
Lal has also requested an explanation as to why a “health card” is a prerequisite for life-saving emergency care and has urged the Ministry to confirm whether staff are familiar with using PATISPlus.
She also questions why, if the emergency ward at CWM Hospital can retrieve patient records using just a last name and date of birth, a separate Nakasi Hospital Card is required.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has acknowledged the concerns raised regarding the Nakasi Health Centre.
The Ministry says it takes all reports on service delivery seriously and that a formal process is now underway to review the matter thoroughly and fairly, including gathering information from all relevant parties.
The Ministry has thanked the public for its patience as it follows due process to ensure an appropriate resolution.
