Davuilevu residents raise alarm over flooding linked to nearby development

Residents of Mataika Road in Davuilevu Housing are raising concerns over repeated flooding, which they say is being caused by nearby subdivision developments.

They warn that lives could be at risk if the issue is not addressed urgently.

Resident Shalvin Narayan says his family has lived in the area for more than a decade without major flooding, but this has changed in recent months.

Narayan says the situation is especially worrying at night when families are asleep.

He says heavy rainfall is now causing water to surge into homes, sometimes reaching floor level and submerging properties, while roads become impassable.

Narayan believes the issue is not caused by rubbish, but by soil runoff clogging the already narrow drainage system.

He says excavation work has led to soil washing into the drainage system, blocking culverts and restricting water flow.

According to residents, most drains in the subdivision feed into a single, undersized main drain that cannot handle the increased runoff.

He adds that several homes have already been partially submerged during recent heavy rain.

These include widening and deepening the main drain, installing larger culverts and improving runoff management from ongoing developments.

He also claims that despite a similar flooding incident in nearby Naqiliso during another development project, no authorities have visited or responded to their concerns.

Narayan warns that with the rainy season continuing, urgent action is needed to prevent a serious disaster.

The family is now calling on authorities to visit the area, assess the situation, and implement long-term solutions.
