Close to 70 powerlifters to compete at Fiji Powerlifting East vs West Championships next week

Close to 70 powerlifters from around the country will compete in this year’s East vs West National Competition, which will also feature the largest number of women participants in the history of the Fiji Powerlifting Federation.

The competition will be held on the 15th and THE 16th of May at National Fitness Gym, formerly known as Rabuka Gym, and has been expanded into a two-day event due to overwhelming interest from athletes.

The Fiji Powerlifting Federation says this year’s competition is shaping up to be one of the biggest milestones for powerlifting in Fiji, with competitors from various age divisions battling for a place on Team Fiji.

The Federation says selected athletes will go on to represent the country at the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Federation Championships, which Fiji is set to host in November for the first time in 20 years.

They say the record turnout of women competitors reflects the rapid growth of strength sports among women in Fiji and marks a significant shift in a sport traditionally dominated by men.

They say they believe the championship will play an important role in identifying and preparing athletes for regional competition later this year.
