Children learn best in their first language-Radrodro

For the students of Navuso Primary School, International Mother Language Day is a day to celebrate the language of their homes, the words they first learned from their parents.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro says language is a powerful reminder that it is more than words, it carries identity, culture, history and belonging.

Radrodro also stressed that children learn best in the language they understand, noting that indigenous languages preserve the knowledge, values and traditions passed down through generations.

He highlighted that the day, proclaimed by UNESCO, promotes linguistic diversity and inclusive education worldwide.

Radrodro also stated that children taught in their first language learn faster, think more critically, and are more likely to remain in school.

While reflecting this year’s theme of youth voices and innovation, he encouraged young people to take pride in their languages and use creativity and technology to help preserve them for future generations.

Radrodro reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening multilingual education, protecting indigenous languages, and ensuring every child can learn in a language they fully understand.
