The man hailed as a hero for disarming one of the alleged perpetrators of the deadly Bondi Beach shooting has now been charged with assault and intimidation.
44-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed was praised for his bravery after intervening during the attack at a Jewish Hanukkah event in December, where 15 people were killed and dozens injured.
Footage from the incident showed Ahmed wrestling a gun away from one of the alleged attackers. He was shot several times during the struggle and was later visited in hospital by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described him as the “best of our country.”
Australian media report that Ahmed has been charged with domestic violence common assault, as well as stalking and intimidation, over an alleged incident involving his father in March.
Ahmed has denied the allegations, telling ABC that the claims are not true at all.
Following the Bondi Beach attack, a fundraiser launched to support Ahmed raised more than A$2.5 million.
He is expected to appear in Sydney’s Bankstown Local Court on June 29.
