Acting Commissioner of Police, Aporosa Lutunauga, has warned newly graduated police recruits against abusing their authority, stressing that such actions would undermine public trust and confidence.
Members of Batch 68 of the Basic Recruits Course have graduated with a Certificate in Policing IV, marking the end of their 16-week training.
Lutunauga reminded the officers of the need to uphold the ethics of policing through honest and trustworthy service delivery.
He says a simple but powerful principle of policing is that anyone standing on the other side of the counter, whether a high-ranking official or a street dweller—must be treated with equal respect.
He further says that there should be no threshold in how people are treated, as everyone is human and therefore deserves respect and decency.
The Acting Commissioner also urged officers to put themselves in others’ shoes and think about how they would want to be treated when entering a police station or community post.
Of the 149 recruits, 10 are members of the Tuvalu Police Force, while 49 are women officers, including two from Tuvalu.
