Director Army Legal Services, Colonel Kitione Tuinaosara

The Director Army Legal Services, Colonel Kitione Tuinaosara says they have come through a very difficult period since 1987 and 2000 where the RFMF and Corrections Officers played law enforcement roles.

While speaking at the international policing standards and military in security operations workshop facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross, Colonel Tuinaosara further says they are trained combatants and really not law enforcement officers, so moving from combat operator into the field of law enforcement is a bit difficult.

He says they have had over the years of deaths in custody and the wrongful application of the use of force and allegations of torture.

He adds they are party to the UN Convention Against Torture.

Colonel Tuinaosara says they are hoping to benefit from this two day workshop.

The workshop aims to raise/enhance awareness of police and military to international standards and best practices pertaining to law enforcement operations and will finish tomorrow.
