Four police officers will appear before the Suva Magistrates Court today in relation to an alleged assault that occurred in August 2024.
Police say the four officers questioned a victim after he allegedly caused a disturbance at a barbecue stall during the morning of 25th August 2024 and it is further alleged that the victim was assaulted following the questioning.
Police say one of the officers is also alleged to have stolen the victim's personal belongings after the assault.
Following the completion of investigations, the case file was referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which advised that formal charges be laid.
Police says the four officers have been jointly charged with one count of acts intended to cause grievous harm.
One officer also faces an additional charge of theft.
All four officers have been suspended pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
The Fiji Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance approach to any abuse of legal authority by its officers.
Police say all complaints and official reports involving allegations of police misconduct are thoroughly investigated by the Internal Affairs Division.
Where evidence indicates the commission of a criminal offence, the matter is referred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for investigation.
Police says upon completion of a criminal investigation, case files are submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for independent legal advice, ensuring transparency, accountability, and independent oversight throughout the investigative process.
