Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston continues to move closer to the Fiji group.

The eye of Cyclone Winston was located about 450 kilometres East North East of Lakeba earlier this afternoon.

On the current forecast track, the eye of Tropical Cyclone Winston will enter the Fiji waters tomorrow morning, and then pass close to Lakeba island.

The cyclone will continue across central Lau and Lomaiviti towards Viti Levu tomorrow night.

The category 4 cyclone is expected to have destructive winds over
the Lau group from early tomorrow afternoon.

Close to the centre the cyclone is expected to have wind speeds between 195 kilometres per hour to 250 kilometres per hour.

Strong winds are expected to pick up in Suva, Nausori, Korovou, Navua, parts of the Coral Coast and Vanua Levu from tomorrow afternoon.

A tropical cyclone alert is also issued for areas from Korovou to parts of the Coral Coast which is the Eastern half of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and nearby islands.

A heavy rain alert is in force for Fiji.

People are advised to take the necessary precautions now as heavy rain can result in flash flooding from tonight.

Damaging to destructive winds may begin several hours before the cyclone centre passes overhead or nearby.

The Nadi Weather Office says the system can slow down or speed up, and the arrival times of the system may change.

Please secure your homes and ensure that there are no weak structures around.

During cyclones, there are water and power cuts.

You are advised to store water, stock up canned food and also get a transistor radio and batteries to listen to the weather updates.
