Tongan King George Tupou V will be buried in the royal tombs in the capital Nuku’alofa today.

Churches, nobles and students held an overnight vigil on Monday outside the Royal Palace where the monarch is lying in state.

Thousands of Tongans will be joined for the burial ceremony by foreign dignitaries, including a large New Zealand delegation due to arrive this morning.

The chairman of the state funeral committee Lord Vaea said the burial procession is expected to start at midday once all the foreign dignitaries have paid their respects.

A church service will be held before King George’s casket will be put on a covered platform and carried by 150 pallbearers to the royal tombs nearby.

Fiji’s President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and the First Lady Adi Koila Nailatikau are also in Nuku’alofa for the funeral.
