Today marks the 133rd anniversary of the arrival of the first Indentured Laborers from India to Fiji.
On May 14th 1879, the first batch of 497 Girmitiyas or indentured labourers were brought to Fiji from India by the British on board the vessel Leonidas.
This continued till 1920 and while some decided to return to India when they were given the option, others decided to stay in Fiji and continue with their lives here. Story by: Ronal Deo
