A major refurbishment of the Waiyevo Subdivisional Hospital in Taveuni is set to transform healthcare delivery for more than 17,000 people across Taveuni and nearby maritime communities.
The project will expand maternity and emergency services, improve accessibility for women, children, and persons with disabilities, and strengthen healthcare for all.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu says the refurbishment marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to bring resilient, high-quality health services to all corners of Fiji.
He says for the Taveuni community, and for the families and villages beyond, having a hospital that can withstand extreme weather, serve reliably, and deliver excellent care is not just a goal, it is the government's promise.
Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Roberts says the project demonstrated the strength of the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Partnership and its focus on improving the lives of Fijians through lasting infrastructure.
He says Australia is proud to partner with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services on this important project for the people of Taveuni.
He adds that together, they are strengthening health infrastructure that is modern, resilient, and accessible to all, reflecting the close partnership between Fiji and Australia.
The refurbishment will be done in stages and is expected to finish in 2026.
