The supermarket in Suva City which has been selling rotten meat, will be charged and taken to court.

This has been confirmed by the Suva City Council Acting Director Health, Naresh Narayan.

Narayan says an abatement notice will be given to them today after 199.70 kilograms of rotten meat was confiscated from the supermarket.

He says other supermarkets have been notified that they are being monitored.

Narayan says the maximum fine a trader can face if they are in breach of the Food Safety Regulations is $50,000 or 10 years imprisonment or both.

Meanwhile the Consumer Council CEO, Seema Shandil says some supermarkets knew that they were selling rotten meat.

Shandil says consumers are urged to continue alerting the Council of any unethical practices in the market place through their National Consumer Helpline toll-free number, 155.
