Drugs remain a major concern for the country as 4 people have been charged and brought to the High Court for their alleged possession of methamphetamine and cocaine in separate cases.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirms a 62-year-old Hungarian national was charged with one count of unlawful importation and one count of unlawful possession of 4.8697kg of methamphetamine.
In another incident, a Malaysian national and two locals were charged with the unlawful importation and unlawful possession of 491.6 grams of methamphetamine.
There was another incident where a man was charged with the unlawful possession of 618.2 grams of methamphetamine and possession of $6,310 cash suspected to be proceeds of crime.
A 43-year-old man was charged with the unlawful possession of 965.69 grams of cocaine.
The ODPP has also confirmed that 27 cases were filed in the High Court with a total of 45 counts of non-sexual offences last month.
There was one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of manslaughter, one count of manslaughter arising from breach of duty, four counts of aggravated robbery, seven counts of aggravated burglary, one count of burglary, nine counts of theft, one count of receiving stolen property, one count of arson, one count of attempted arson, four counts of acts with intent to cause grievous harm, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, one count of serious assault, five counts of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, two counts of unlawful importation of illicit drugs, one count of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, one count of going equipped, one count of damaging property, and one count of breach of suspended sentence.
There were 42 people charged with 45 counts of non-sexual offences where three were juveniles.
There were 22 victims of the 45 counts of non-sexual offences and there were five incidents where the accused and the victims were related to one another.
A 30-year-old man was charged with the murder of a 36-year-old man where it is alleged that the accused punched and kicked the victim multiple times after an altercation, resulting in the victim’s death.
In another incident, three men were charged with the attempted murder of a police officer who was manning a roadblock in Laqere.
The accused persons were additionally charged with going equipped, serious assault and unlawful possession.
The charges against two accused persons were discontinued, while the charge of one count of attempted murder and one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs against the driver of the vehicle continues.
A 30-year-old man was charged with manslaughter after he allegedly assaulted the victim multiple times, which resulted in the victim’s death. The accused is charged alongside other accused persons who had been earlier charged.
In another incident, a 58-year-old bus driver was charged with manslaughter arising from breach of duty after he failed to take precaution while driving the bus, which resulted in the death of a 66-year-old woman in 2022.
A 39-year-old man was charged with attempted arson for allegedly attempting to set fire to his de facto partner’s house while in another incident, a 42-year-old man was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm for allegedly punching his 48-year-old wife.
A 43-year-old woman was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm for allegedly throwing hot water on her 35-year-old brother-in-law while a 38-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm for allegedly striking his 20-year-old nephew with a cane knife.
A 63-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm to his 53-year-old de facto partner. However, this matter was discontinued after the victim could not be located.
In other cases, cash and assorted items were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary incidents, consisting of street mugging, house and shop break-ins.
Two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy were charged with aggravated burglary and theft after they allegedly broke into a 25-year-old woman’s flat and stole assorted household items.
A 47-year-old caretaker was charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to her employer’s house following a dispute over unpaid wages.
