Speeding continues to be the major killer on our roads causing 19 deaths so far this year.

The issue of speeding has been a major concern and Fijivillage has witnessed many speeding vehicles in a number of our main roads and side streets.

We have been told that Police traffic operations will intensify in the coming days and more traffic officers will be visible at the black spots and locations where drivers have been found to be speeding.

Police have also been able to establish that most fatalities have been occurring on Friday afternoons and late Sunday night.

Deputy Director Traffic SP Richard Raju says they have increased their manpower for highway operations in all divisions and are covering as much as they can.

Alarming statistics have surfaced for traffic infringements from 1st January to this morning where 508 drivers were arrested for drunk driving, 312 people were booked for speeding, 894 were booked for careless driving, 156 people were caught driving without a driving license while 108 cases of illegal operations were recorded.

The 39 people that have died on our roads so far accounts for 16 pedestrians, 12 passengers, nine drivers and two bicycle riders.

The road death toll for the same period last year was 46.
