Severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall now in force for Viti Levu and Southern half of Vanua Levu

A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for the interior, Southern and Eastern parts of Viti Levu and the Southern half of Vanua Levu.

The Nadi Weather Office says severe thunderstorms are expected to produce heavy rainfall which may lead to flash-flooding of low-lying areas in the next few hours over the interior, southern and eastern parts of Viti Levu and southern half of Vanua Levu.

They say a moist northeast to southeast wind flow prevails over the group and afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop into severe thunderstorms and expected to produce heavy rainfall.

The Weather Office says due to the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms, some locations within the warning area may experience little to no impact, while others could face severe conditions.

They are asking for people to please remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as conditions can change rapidly.

People are advised to:

a) Keep clear of flooded creeks and drains.

b) Don't walk, ride bike or drive through flood waters.

c) Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.

d) Unplug electrical appliances.

They say thunderstorm activity and associated heavy rainfall is expected to persist until later this evening.
