People across Fiji are being urged to prepare for drier conditions as below normal rainfall is forecast to continue until January next year, while cooler than normal day and night-time temperatures are expected across most of the country until October.
The Fiji Metrological Office says the El Niño is currently underway and is strengthening across the tropical Pacific Ocean.
They say this El Niño event is likely to be strong to very strong and is likely to persist through the end of this year and into early 2027.
During El Niño, Fiji typically experiences less rainfall.
The Nadi Weather Office also forecasts that from this month to October 2026, both the day and night-time temperatures are likely to be below normal across the Fiji Group, while near normal temperatures are likely for Rotuma.
They are urging farmers to prepare for drier conditions, especially in the dry areas of Fiji.
The public is also being urged to keep warm during cooler nights, take care during dry and dusty conditions, monitor water sources and use water carefully throughout the dry season.
The tourism industry is also being encouraged to promote water conservation measures in hotels and resorts.
