Primary school teachers have gone to Salary Band E and secondary school teachers have gone to Band F.

This has been explained by Director Civil Service Reform Management Unit Jane Curran who is accompanying the Attorney General and Minister of Civil Service Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on several road shows designed especially for civil servants.

Curran says the Ministry of Education has informed them that the requirement for a primary school teacher is a diploma and the requirement for a secondary teacher is a degree.

She says they are aware that there are degree holders in primary and secondary schools.

Curran says they have thoroughly reviewed and held discussions with the ministry over a long period of time regarding the actual qualifications and duty requirements of the different positions.

She says they understand this is difficult for primary teachers, particularly those who have been in the system for some time but it has come about after a proper evaluation of the job.

A primary teacher had raised concerns that she holds a degree and should be paid more than the primary school teachers’ salary band.
