Public celebrates 100th anniversary of Grand Pacific Hotel
It was a historic day for Fiji yesterday as hundreds of people from all walks of life gathered outside Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the iconic hotel and taste the longest Swiss Roll ever made in the world.

Construction of the GPH began in 1909 and it opened for business on this day in 1914.

An open invitation was sent out to members of the public to attend the birthday celebrations today as the longest Swiss Roll was cut for all who were in attendance after they sang happy birthday with the Fiji Police Band.

Deputy Chairman of the Fiji National Provident Fund, Tom Ricketts said it was a special occasion as the Grand Pacific Hotel is partially owned by the people of Fiji.

36 kitchen staff used close to 60kg of flour to create the 150.6 meter long cake which sat in the 163 meter long car-park of the Hotel.

Japan are the current world record holders after creating a 130 meter long Swiss Roll last year.

Grand Pacific Hotel General Manager Eugen Diethelm said although 150.6 meters is a new world record they do not wish to enter the Guinness Book of World Records yet, as they intend to further break the record by baking a 185 meter long roll in the future.

Meanwhile a Sheetal Sharma won a return trip to Sydney after discovering a small plane in the cake.
