Thirty protesters picketed outside the Fiji High Commission in Wellington yesterday calling for the release of union leaders and union members arrested by Police in Fiji over the past few days.

Radio NZ reports the President of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, Richard Wagstaff said the crackdown was an atrocious response to people exercising their democratic right to protest.

He says unions around the world are looking at this and they will stand up expect nations in the Pacific including New Zealand to make it clear to the Fijian authorities that they cannot tolerate this in our region.
