“Your rights and identity are well covered under the 2013 constitution.”

Those were the words of the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau to the Solomon Island descendants at Marata Village in Wailoku this morning.

Ratu Epeli made the comments during the question and answer session on his visit to Wailoku and he also assured the villagers that the government is well aware of their plight about the land they are occupying.

It was highlighted during the Talanoa session that there is 27 years left on their lease but Ratu Epeli told them not to worry as the government is trying to find a solution even if it’s taking long.

Ratu Epeli also said that under the 2013 constitution everyone is protected and they are now known as Fijians.

Wailoku Land Trustee member Pastor Joseva Lauvanua said the community is honored to have Ratu Epeli this morning as he is the first ever President to visit Wailoku.

Pastor Lauvanua added that 90% of the five villagers in Wailoku have maternal links to Fiji and they have been occupying the land since 1937.

The President will visit the Solomon Islands descendants in Kalekana, Lami this afternoon.
