The Agriculture Ministry said it is seriously looking into the possibility of exporting mushrooms from Fiji in future.
Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Uraia Waibuta said they want to produce high quality mushrooms.
He said their first priority is to meet the local demand as the total annual consumption for mushrooms is 30 tonnes a year which costs over $6 million.
Waibuta said a lot of Asians are coming to Fiji who is demanding different varieties of mushrooms.
Meanwhile, our farmers will get to learn the techniques for growing different varieties of mushrooms soon through the training and demonstration center which will be constructed in Legalega, Nadi.
The Chinese Government will contribute for the bulk of the costs for the construction of the center which is around $14 million.
