Australian police have described the moment rescuers found two terrified men who had been stranded on the roof of their car for four days, after becoming bogged and spooked by a curious saltwater crocodile.

The ABC reports 19-year-old Charlie Williams, and 37-year-old Beau Bryce‑Maurice, along with their dog Mindee, were on a fishing trip just north of Broome, Western Australia, when their vehicle became bogged.

After the men failed to return, police launched a massive land and aerial search to locate the missing fishermen.

It is understood the men became nervous when the crocodile attempted to "go for the dog".

The ute was bogged around 100 metres from mangroves, a popular habitat for a number of saltwater crocodiles in the region.

They stayed on top of the vehicle and went through about six tides which covered the vehicle on a number of occasions.
