Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) has successfully completed its first mediastinal surgery led by renowned cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr Sanjeev Khulbey.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in the hospital's capability to handle complex thoracic procedures.

The patient, 39-year-old Nitesh Kumar, had been experiencing unexplained symptoms for several months.

After undergoing detailed investigations at PSH Hospitals, he was diagnosed with a rare mediastinal mass.

Nitesh discovered his condition three months prior to the surgery.

As the mass was located in the central chest region, close to vital organs, the procedure required meticulous planning and execution by an expert team.

Dr Sanjeev Khulbey, backed by a skilled surgical and anesthetic team, took on the challenging case.

Riding on the back of 30-years of experience and multiple complex surgeries to his credit, Dr Khulbey brought calm confidence to the operating table.

The surgery involved the removal of the mediastinal tumour, located near the heart and major vessels.

Such procedures are known for their high risks, but Dr Khulbey and his team navigated it successfully with cutting-edge tools and precision techniques.

PSH Hospitals provided the perfect ecosystem for such an advanced surgery.

From high-end diagnostic imaging to a fully equipped cardiac operation theatre (OT) and intensive care unit (ICU), the infrastructure played a key role in the positive outcome.

Post-surgery, Nitesh was closely monitored and cared for in the hospital's state-of-the-art ICU.

His recovery has been steady and complication-free, a reflection of the hospital's high standard of post-operative care.

Dr Khulbey expressed satisfaction with the result, saying, "We're proud to have achieved this milestone at PSH Hospitals.

It demonstrates our growing strength in cardiothoracic surgery and our commitment to patient-centred excellence." The successful procedure not only restored Nitesh's health but also set a new benchmark for surgical care at PSH Hospitals.

It paves the way for future advanced thoracic procedures to be performed locally with confidence.

PSH Hospitals founder and chief executive officer Parvish Kumar says his team of highly trained specialists and professionals remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of medical care in the region.

‘’This successful mediastinal surgery stands as a testament to our skilled professionals, advanced technology, and unwavering focus on patient well-being,’’ Mr Kumar said.

Meanwhile, Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) is taking a significant step forward in heart care with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) treatment services at its hospitals across Fiji — marking a first for the private health sector and a major win for cardiac care in the country.

With support from public health partners and a growing network of patients, PSH Hospitals is leading the charge against RHD, a preventable but serious condition that continues to affect thousands of Fijians, especially children and young adults.

Rheumatic Heart Disease remains one of the leading causes of early death in the Pacific and unfortunately, Fiji has the highest rate of RHDs in the world as per statistics available online.

It starts with something as simple as a sore throat — caused by a ‘Group A Streptococcal’ infection — that is not properly treated.

Left unchecked, the infection can lead to rheumatic fever, which in turn damages the heart valves, especially the mitral valve.

The result is chronic breathlessness, fatigue, chest pain, heart failure, and in some cases, premature death.

In Fiji, the burden of RHD is high. Studies show that one in every 50 school-aged children is living with RHD, with many more at risk.

For too long, these cases have gone undiagnosed or untreated — and in many situations, patients only discover the problem when it’s too late.
