McCartney now a free man

Australian national, Simon McCartney who was earlier charged for the murder of his 26 year old wife, Ashika Lata has been discharged, allowing him to walk out of Court a free man.

Magistrate John Semisi has questioned the efficiency of the Police Force in carrying out investigations as Police Prosecutor, Bhawani Prasad asked the court this morning for an adjournment of the case as Police were still carrying out investigations.

Magistrate Semisi said he was baffled as to how charges were laid with investigations still underway.

Village News has also been informed that DPP lawyer, Ashishna Prasad had earlier today told the Court that Police Prosecutor Bhawani Prasad did not have a right to prosecute as he was not sanctioned by the DPP's office.

In his defense, Bhawani Prasad said that he had a total of 20 years of experience in the field and therefore was capable of handling the case.

Ashishna Prasad also asked the Court to terminate the court proceedings as under the Constitution, the police did not have the power to prosecute or lay criminal charges except for the DPP's office.

However, in response to the ruling, Bhawani Prasad said that as soon as the Police find more evidence they will bring McCartney back to court.

Police are now consulting with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions office to finalise charges against the sixteen people who are alleged to have been involved in the plot to kill Interim Prime Minister, some senior military officers and some members of the Interim Cabinet.
