The 28 year old man involved in the alleged sacrilege case at Shiv Temple in Samabula has been charged.
Police say the man has been charged with one count of sacrilege and one count of throwing object.
He will appear in the Suva Magistrates Court tomorrow.
In response to concerns raised on the process taken by investigators to seek medical evaluation, Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu says the action was necessary to ensure all processes with regards to upholding the rights of an arrested person were covered before an individual is charged and produced in court.
Commissioner Tudravu says the Fiji Police Force’s priority is to ensure the conduct of an impartial investigation in accordance with processes, where the rights of the suspect must be upheld.
The head of the Fiji Police Force has also noted with concern the exchange of hateful rhetoric regarding the incident, and calls for tolerance, stating that the investigation process would determine the motive, rather than baseless speculation which only aggravates the situation.
