Congo national, Kiala Henri Lusaka has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Suva High Court for killing his wife in July 2019 in Service Street, Suva.

The 42-year-old murdered his Australian wife, Jennifer Ann Downes in their home.

Downes worked for the United Nations World Food Programme.

While sentencing the 42-year-old man, High Court Judge, Justice Kulatunga Mudiyanselage Gihan Himanshu Kulatunga says Downes death was brought by a very cruel act while children were in her home.

He says their 3 children are under the care of a family member in Australia who is 72-years-old.

Justice Kulatunga says it is clear that Downes parents, siblings and three children have suffered untold pain and mental trauma which will certainly be for a long time.

He says in his victim impact statement, Downes father said to lose a daughter is to have a piece of your soul ripped away and could never be replaced.

Lusaka will serve a minimum term of 20 years before a pardon can be considered.
