Teaching and learning have become increasingly challenging due to rapid changes in digital technology, innovation, and the rise of artificial intelligence in the 21st century.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted this while speaking to teachers and students participating in the Learning Management System Online Education in Navua.
Professor Prasad says the challenges are new to all of us as parents, teachers and those involved in the education system as a whole.
He says the coalition government is aware of the challenges facing children, teachers, and the education system at present in the country.
The Deputy Prime Minister says they have not only increased the budgetary allocations for the Education Ministry but provided new initiatives such as the back-to-school support.
He says they have moved to merit-based scholarships because they felt that these changes are necessary.
Professor Prasad says they have also announced an Education Commission that will look at the changes, the challenges, the curriculum and the aspects of the educational development.
The Deputy Prime Minister is pleased by the new learning management system because people who have left Fiji and are living in other countries are looking for opportunities to give back to their country.
He also acknowledged that through the learning management system provided to the students they are trying to identify the performance, the learning abilities and tailor-made programs.
Professor Prasad stressed that one of the most difficult issues is the scourge of drugs that has engulfed many children, youths and adults.
He further says the government is determined to bring this spread of drugs, which was neglected for years, to a situation where they will ensure that children and young people are not affected.
The Deputy Prime Minister adds that drug is a threat to families and everyone must work very hard to ensure that no one is exposed to them.
